Nilai energi yang diubah tergantung pada kebutuhan penggunanya. Perpindahan energi dari satu bagian ke bagian lainnya pada frekuensi rendah biasanya menggunakan inti besi, di mana terdapat gulungan primer dan sekunder. Ketika gulungan primer diberikan arus listrik, maka akan terjadi medan elektromagnetik pada inti besi. Kegunaan transformator ini adalah untuk mengisolasi jaringan listrik utama terhadap UPS, memperbaiki tegangan grounding, mengurangi gangguan interferensi jaringan yang bekerja sebagai filter, dan dapat menahan terjadinya lonjakan listrik sesaat pada jaringan, seperti tersambar petir.
